Running Glossary
rule of allowance: A rule that tells you what you may do. (in Settlers of Catan you may play a victory point card at any time)
rule of consequence: A rule that tells you if you do one thing, something else will necessarily result. (in Halo if you teamkill you will have an extended respawn time)
rule of prohibition: A rule that tells you what you may not do. (in chess you cannot castle out of or through check)
uncanny: the feeling of anxiety that results from a familiar object becoming suddenly unfamiliar (dopplegangers, etc.)
narrative: a sequence, and the act of sequencing, events in a manner that produces a feeling of progression and sense (a story)
volition: the power of faculty of choosing; the will (choice)
volitional narrative: a narrative whose sequencing and progression requires the active participation of an interactive subject (a story you have to help tell)
goal: the end point of a narrative, the target and culmination of any sequential arc ('The End', 'You've Won!', 'You are SUPER player!')
game: a volitional narrative system with a stated or understood goal(s) intended for enjoyment/entertainment (you play games, you can win, they should be fun)
malarkey: exaggerated or foolish talk, usually intended to deceive (I'm serious, but don't take me too seriously)
